Russian Propaganda Posters Reimagined As Pro-LGBT Campaign

Russia, the post-Soviet country that is currently hosting the 2014 winter Olympics, has arranged for some pretty illogical legal action to be taken against LGTB groups in its nation. It has caused many to burst into protest and some have been detained as a consequence of various peaceful attempts to showcase discontent.

In the midst of all of this, a tumblr page by the name of Pride Propaganda, takes a different and quieter yet effective approach to all the protests.  In efforts to adhere to the pro-LGBT agenda, PP transforms vintage Soviet posters into brightly colored displays of men, women and children waiving and wearing rainbow flags. The familiar images of Young Pioneers,  working men and loyal mothers (all symbolism for the confining ways of Soviet Russia) take on entirely new meanings when cloaked in the vibrant rainbow flags that we’ve come to associate with the global pride movement.

Catching The Light In Asia: Breathtaking Photography By Weerapong Chaipuck

Asia is a beautiful and mysterious continent with breathtaking landscapes and deep-rooted traditions. This is exactly how photographer Weerapong Chaipuck shows it in his photos. Looking at his work, it is hard to believe that he took up photography only after an early retirement from the medical profession.

His main interest is travel and landscape photography, through which he shows us the beauty of our world. “To create a project, you must do homework about the place; which season and period of time are optimal for taking photographs, what is the vantage point, which lens should be used, and what your post production process is going to look like,” – says Chaipuck. And that homework has paid off with well-executed and stunningly atmospheric shots.

Although he uses a lot of Photoshop and other production techniques to create his star trail photos, he says that the atmospheric qualities of his shots are thanks to knowing the right time of day to shoot. “When shooting landscapes, it is 100% natural, and pinpointing the exact time of day to shoot, whether that be 30 minutes before the sun begins to rise or 30 minutes before sunset, is a constant challenge. But that’s also what makes it all worth it,” he says.

Beautiful Gay Couples Photographed Around The World By Braden Summers

Love knows no boundaries – not age, race, religion or gender. In his “All Love Is Equal” photo series, New York-based photographer Braden Summers set out to drive this point home by taking stunning photographs of gay and lesbian couples around the world.

Summers, who identifies himself as gay, traveled to France, India, Lebanon, Brazil, South Africa, the U.S. and the U.K. to take photographs for his Kickstarter-funded project (which has raised over $23K). It took Summers about six weeks to create these dramatic and  romantic scenes depicting only gay and lesbian couples. He mentioned that models were used to underscore the images’ impression of a perfect romance.

“A large driving force behind creating this series was actually less about affecting the gay community directly, and more about giving the general population a way to relate to gay imagery which is devoid of sex, victimization, or banality – themes that might usually prevent some folks from connecting,” Summers explains. “When thinking of iconic romance, ask yourself if any imagery comes to mind that is not showing heterosexual couples? Probably not. I would like to use this work as a platform to discuss why that is and how to change it.”

Hopefully, Summers’ work will serve to put a more intimate and human face on an issue that has angry and passionate supporters on both sides of the fence in countries around the world. Given the long struggle of the LGBT community and the events in Russia over the past year, Summers’ work should remind us that we should love our neighbour, regardless of whether or not we agree with them.

Amusing Photo Series Imagines If Shoes Had Teeth

In a surreal and slightly disturbing series titled Running Gag by the Hamburg-based studio POP. Postproduction, they imagine what it would be like if shoes teeth to accompany their tongues. POP specializes in photo-retouching, and manipulated the images has the loafers, boat shoes, and Converse sneakers laughing and grinning. Some have a gap tooth, others a gold grill, while some have hardly any teeth at all.

There is some correspondence with the teeth and the shoe. For instance, the pink canvas shoe with decorative laces has a mouth full of braces, so we’d imagine they are a teenage girl. The gold-studded loafer is an “alternative style” to the preppy shoe, so its gold lip ring feels appropriate.

Despite being slickly-produced and brightly-colored series, the Running Gag is subtle, and it’s only after more than a seconds glance that you realize there are teeth in these shoes. It’s POP’s Photoshopping skills that add to the believability of these characters, and they look liked they’d be right in place in a horror film. (Via Design Taxi)

Ludovic Florent’s Mesmerizing Photoseries Of Nude Dancers Engulfed In Dust

Ludovic Florent‘s new photoseries Poussières d’étoiles (which translating as Stardust) features the natural beauty of the human body in motion, capturing dancer’s poses in moments of ecstasy, distress and grace. Each photograph is highlighted by the staging, a chalk and sand floor which enhances each movement, with dust clouds mirroring the appendage’s motions to create a dramatic physical presence of their own. Florent says, “In our changing society, my photographic work is guided by a humanistic look, willingness to foreground the natural beauty of the body, free to express his grace and personality.”

The Metz, France-based Florent created Poussières d’étoiles for Gallery HEGOA, and in anticipation for the European Festival of Nude Photography in Arles, France in May, 2014. The photographer further explains his work, “‘Behind every carnal envelope hides a soul that is both sensitive and flamboyant as I try to capture in each of my photographs.’ We certainly enjoy his work guided by a humanistic look, finding expression in a series that is both, sensitive and vivid.”   (via ignant)

A Simple Trick Makes These 3D Gifs Pop Out Of The Screen At You

A new trick has been circulating among gif creators that allows them to create animated images with a convincing 3D aspect.

The trick is simple but deceptive – these gifs’ creators use white lines to split the images into 3 panels. That way, elements of the animated images can “pop” out of the frame in front of the white lines and toward the viewer. The trick works because the white lines establish a clear reference point for the foreground, or “screen,” if you’d like to think of it that way. Once the action in the image seems to pass in front of those white lines, our brain is fooled into thinking that the action has moved out in front of the foreground.
